Custom Kitchen Remodeling: Understanding Kitchen Cabinetry Part I

Understanding Custom Kitchen Remodeling and Kitchen Cabinetry: Part I

Beginning any remodeling project can seem intimidating whether you intend to do the work yourself or are planning on hiring a professional.

The kitchen is, as we have noted in a previous article, the heart and hearth of the home. Taking on a kitchen remodeling project can seem particularly intimidating if you do not prepare and do your research. That’s why, whether you are a do-it-yourselfer or you are hiring a professional kitchen remodeling contractor, it is always important to arm yourself with the best kitchen remodeling information available. By doing your homework and understanding the various ins and outs of your custom kitchen remodeling project, the job will go a lot smoother and the resulting custom kitchen will be one you will be proud of, and use, for many years to come.

Understanding the ins and outs of kitchen cabinets and countertops is a smart place to begin. The selection of right kitchen cabinets for your budget and lifestyle is crucial to the overall success of the overall kitchen remodeling project.

Kitchen cabinets generally fall into one of three categories:

  • Stock
  • Semicustom
  • Custom

Stock kitchen cabinetry is mass produced and sold without regard for who buys them. Stock kitchen cabinetry is generally what you thing of when you go to a “big box” store like Lowe’s or Home Depot and buy kitchen cabinets off the shelf.

Semicustom kitchen cabinetry is built to order. The semicustom kitchen cabinets offer a wider variety of choices, including:

  • Styles
  • Finishes
  • Accessories

Custom kitchen cabinetry is built to precise specifications and to fit the overall look, feel, and function of the kitchen. Custom cabinets can be built to fit any space. The only limitation, when it comes to custom cabinetry, is your imagination and, ultimately, your budget. Interestingly, when considered as one aspect of an entire custom kitchen remodeling project, custom cabinets may be surprisingly affordable.

In subsequent posts we will cover kitchen design considerations and costs, along with ways to offset costs by employing a number of strategies available to a custom woodworking shop that are not available when purchasing off the shelf.

We will look at the various options when considering custom kitchen cabinetry in our next post.

To include:

  • The cabinet’s foundation
  • Kitchen cabinet drawer construction
  • Kitchen cabinet shelves
  • Kitchen cabinet doors
  • Cabinet fixtures (i.e., hardware)

We hope you will fiund this series helpful and we will continue it for the next several weeks, so please provide feedback, make comments, and ask questions. We will make every attempt to answer them in a timely manner.
